STUNNING TUSCAN MURAL IN VERMONT AFTER SEVERE STORM 15 September 2009
Dozens of art lovers descended on Vermont this weekend to admire the new mural that local artist Alison Riordan recently painted there.
A severe storm became the inspiration for this unique, original piece of art. The On The Vermont Guest House now boasts a fitting Tuscan mural
that fits in beautifully with the Italian style of the house.
Local Bot River artist Alison Riordan was given an unusual blank canvas in the form of a large 2.5m x 4.5m wall that had been covered in ivy before, but that had been suddenly ripped off the wall by the storm on the night of Friday, 15 May this year. Says Pauli Roodbol, owner of On The Vermont Guest House: “We were shocked to see on the Saturday morning that during the stormy night all the ivy had come off the wall and we had to get professionals in to cut down the thick ivy. We then decided to ask Alison to do a mural on the wall. She had done several commissioned paintings of our dogs and our guest house before and we love her style.”
Alison submitted five watercolour samples of Tuscan landscapes and one was chosen. It took the accomplished artist, who is a former 'Moyra Broom" Trophy winner for best oil painting by the South African Society of Artists, just two days to finish the large painting. The Roodbol-family is delighted with the results. Pauli Roodbol says “It is beautiful, Alison has done a fantastic job, the landscape is very Cezanne-like”.
Alison herself is also pleased with what has turned out to be her first mural. “Interestingly enough, I have recently started to work on larger canvasses than I normally do so I did not find it difficult. I just bought a bigger brush!”, she laughs. “I decided to go back after two days to see how I really felt about it and I was very pleased when I saw it again, the colours are just right.”
Art lovers were invited to come and admire Alison’s mural at On The Vermont Guest House last Saturday and many came and enjoyed the work of art while
talking to the artist herself. Other works by Alison were also on display. “The best time to enjoy the painting is at sundown when we put the pool lights on which show off the Tuscan mural at its best”, says Pauli Roodbol.
